Cyclones land St. Louis 2019 WR Maurice Massey

While the recruiting world is hyper-focused on the class of 2018’s early signing period, St. Louis class of 2019 wide receiver Maurice Massey got Iowa State fans looking toward the future for a few moments on Tuesday night.

“Although I have many options, I had to start narrowing it down,” Massey said. “ Over the weeks and months Iowa State and their coaching staff have been showing a lot of love texting me edits daily.”

Massey announced his commitment to Iowa State on Tuesday evening, becoming the third class of 2019 commitment for the Cyclones this month.

The three-star prospect out of Francis Howell North High School in St. Louis was closing in on double-digit scholarship offers when he made his commitment, but he had previously narrowed his focus to a small handful of schools and was ready to get on with the next phase of his recruitment.

“I want to start that even better bond with the school I’m going to be continuing my education, along with my football career, with,” Massey said. “Iowa State is just the right fit and now that I got that out the way I can focus on the season ahead and building better relationships.”

The relationship with the Iowa State coaching staff was a key factor in Massey’s decision. Wide receivers coach Bryan Gasser was the staff member he communicates with most often and he told the 6-foot-3 Massey they plan to utilize him the same as they currently do with senior standout Allen Lazard.

“We both play the same: aggressive, fast and strong,” Massey said. “The system is set up perfectly for guys like us. Of course I’ve watched him and he’s had a great season. Even though he’s leaving I’ll be that guy to fill his shoes, making those big plays and being the next big-time wide receiver at Iowa State.”

As a junior Massey caught 54 passes for 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns from his wide receiver position. He also recorded four interceptions playing defensive back this past season.
