CU lands Cali linebacker

The Colorado Buffaloes have a history of solid linebacker play. Once again the Buffs land an outstanding linebacker in Greg Newman (6-4, 230, 4.7) from Westlake, Calif. Newman and his Westlake teammates just closed out a dream season winning the Southern Section Division IV championship with a perfect 14-0 record.
During Westlake’s perfect season they beat Newhall (Calif.) Hart who is the Southern Section CIF Division II champ and Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame who is Southern Section CIF Division III champs.

The Buffs are following a recruiting tradition that has been around for a long time.
One thing that the Buffs have been successful over the years dating back to the days of former head coach Bill McCartney was signing players from winning programs.
The thinking was that you bring in talented players who were used to winning wouldn’t tolerate losing on the D-I level and that they would pay the price that it takes to be successful.
The Buffs get rich with Newman. He is one of the most underrated players in southern California.
Newman just makes plays. He accounted for 120 tackles, ten tackles for loss, three sacks, two picks and one forced fumble in 2003.
Newman chose Colorado over other offers from Arizona State, BYU, Colorado State, Utah and Fresno State.
“I liked the coaches at CU,” Newman said. “They are awesome.”
“I love the atmosphere when I took my trip there,” Newman said. “The academics are great and so is the football program. It just seems like a great fit for me.”
Assistant coach David Borbely was the main recruiter. Linebackers coach Brian Cabral was in the house last Tuesday and head coach Gary Barnett will be in the house tomorrow evening.
