Cox off to a great start

Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral standout Rodney Cox (6-1, 193, 4.45) has been stellar on both sides of the ball thus far his senior season. That Cox has been outstanding on defense has not been a surprise, but that he is emerging as top running was somewhat unexpected.
As junior Cox was an all-CIF and all-league selection as a defensive back he is now getting looks as an offensive player, too.

“I’m not speaking as father, but as a coach” Rodney Cox, Sr. said. “Rodney is causing trouble and mayhem on both sides of the ball.”
In two games, Cox has rushed for 425 yards and three touchdowns on only 28 carries. That is good for a pretty impressive 15.2 average per carry average.
Not only is Cox doing the job on offense, but he’s getting it done defensively, too. Cox has made two game saving tackles in the closing seconds of their first two games.
Cox has that second gear on both sides of the ball.
Cox, Sr. has devoted his life in helping kids get it done academically. “I had a scholarship out of high school to Washington,” Cox, Sr. said. “I didn’t qualify and I have made it my life work to let kids know the importance of academics.”
It is sure working his son as Cox, Jr., is a three-time all-academic scholar at the academically challenging Cathedral high.
Cox, Jr. is one of the main reasons that Cathedral is 2-0. In last Friday’s game against Cantwell, Cathedral fell behind by two touchdowns.
Cathedral roared back when Cox ran for a 55-yard touchdown. Cox and Cathedral prevailed in a tough contest 33-27 with Cox leading the way.
Washington, UCLA, Arizona, Oregon and Montana have all made calls to the Cox household since September 1st.
Cox has tremendous upsides and he could end up a variety of positions on the D-I level. He can play all four defensive spots, he is getting looks as a running back and if continues his torrid pace he could end up there and could even grow into a linebacker or rover.
As a junior, Cox had 69 tackles, 12 deflections, three picks and three fumble recoveries. He was also special on special teams, blocking two punts and returning two kicks for touchdowns during the CIF playoffs in 2002.
