Conference breakdown: ACC recruiting needs in 2018

National Signing Day for the 2017 recruiting class is just over seven months away but many programs have already started working on their 2018 recruiting classes. With that in mind, take a look at each ACC team’s positions of needs in the 2018 recruiting cycle.

BOSTON COLLEGE: DB, WR, DL/DT

The 2018 recruiting class will be loaded with outside players on both sides of the ball for Boston College. They have already offered close to 10 defensive backs and more than 10 wide receivers. Many of these offers are concentrated in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, but they will certainly expanded to other parts of the country over the next few months. Adding more players on the defensive line will also be an area of focus.

CLEMSON: DB, DT, RB, LT

Depending on what happens with the rest of the 2017 class and how the 2016 season goes, Clemson will need to reload in the secondary with the 2018 class. The Tigers aren't recruiting defensive tackles in the 2017 cycle so that will be a position they will need to address in the next recruiting class. Clemson will look to bring in another running back or two and they will also be looking for the next left tackle to replace Mitch Hyatt.

DUKE: WR, RB, DT

Duke commit Gunnar Holmberg

Duke already has their 2018 quarterback in Gunnar Holmberg, and the Blue Devils will be looking to surround him with playmakers. Wide receiver and running back will be priorities as Duke tries to improve offensively. On defense, Duke will focus on bringing in more defensive tackles to help solidify their front.

FLORIDA STATE: DE, LB, DT, OL

The Seminoles already have five commitments in the 2018 class and are clearly off to a great start. Florida State will continue to focus on the defensive front seven. Defensive ends, defensive tackles and linebackers are going to be their main focus as 2018 recruiting picks up. Look for Florida State to add a couple offensive linemen as well.

GEORGIA TECH: CB, S, OG/OC

Cornerbacks and safeties are two of the top priorities for Georgia Tech in the 2018 class. The Yellow Jackets don't have any commitments in that class yet and haven't started to offer many 2018 prospects yet. Another focus in 2018 for Georgia Tech will be interior offensive linemen.

LOUISVILLE: QB, WR, DT

Louisville's top priority in 2018 will be quarterback. Lamar Jackson will likely be gone and the coaching staff will have to find someone to fill his shoes. They have three 2018 commitments so far, but the Cardinals will have to find some wide receivers for that quarterback to throw to as well. Look for Louisville to load up on defensive tackles also.

MIAMI: DB, LB, WR, QB

The Hurricanes have seven commitments in the 2018 class so far and a few of them are defensive backs, their biggest position of need in the 2018 cycle. Miami will also need to load up on linebackers and get a few more wide receivers in addition to the one that is already committed. Mark Richt will need to add another quarterback to the Miami roster as well.

N.C. STATE: RB, OL

N.C. State has three 2018 commitments so far but haven't knocked out any positions of need yet. One running back is committed, but the Wolfpack will need to add at least one more to this class. Offensive line will be the other main focus in 2018. N.C. State has been trying to get bigger and more athletic up front for the last few recruiting classes.

NORTH CAROLINA: DL, QB, TE, DB

North Carolina has put together an impressive 2017 recruiting class so far but have yet to pull in any 2018 commitments. Defensive line will be a priority. Coach Larry Fedora will need to reel in a quarterback in 2018. Tight end will be a position of need for North Carolina and they can always use a few more defensive backs.

PITTSBURGH: TE, RB

Defensive recruiting is rolling right along for Pittsburgh, and Pat Narduzzi will surely bring in one or two guys on the defensive line, at linebacker and in the secondary in 2018, but the Panthers need to be more dynamic on offense. Tight ends can help open up the passing game and turn short runs into big gains. Pittsburgh needs one or two of them in 2018. Look for the Panthers to add at least one running back as well.

SYRACUSE: DT, DE, OL

Dino Babers and his staff have done a tremendous job building this 2017 class, but there is more work to be done in the 2018 class. Specifically, Syracuse will focus on the offensive and defensive lines in 2018. Syracuse hasn't picked up a commitment in the 2018 class yet, but defensive tackles and defensive ends will get a lot of attention.

VIRGINIA: OL, DL

Much like Syracuse, Virginia will also be focusing their 2018 recruiting efforts on the trenches. As Bronco Mendenhall and his staff try to develop the Cavaliers, they will need more talent on the offensive and defensive lines. A few linemen have already left the program for various reasons since the new staff took over.

VIRGINIA TECH: OL, RB, LB

Justin Fuente and his staff will have the biggest needs on the offensive side of the ball in the 2018 class. Offensive line will be a major position of need, and the Hokies will have at least one running back spot to fill. Defensively, linebacker will be a priority for defensive coordinator Bud Foster.

WAKE FOREST: OL, DE, WR

Wake Forest is improving incrementally and part of that process is continuing to build up their offensive line. That won’t change in the 2018 class. Pass rushers on the defensive line will be a point of emphasis and should take some pressure off the rest of the defense. Bringing in a few more wide receivers will help make the offense more successful.
