Compton linebacker gets first offer

After being a downtrodden football program for many years it is apparent that under the leadership of head coach Calvin Bryant, the Compton, Calif., Tartars have become a rags to riches story. Compton had their best season in 2005 in 21 years when they finished 7-3 in 2005 and things look like they will be even better in 2006.
After years of a talent drought Compton's cup is running over. There could be several players who earn D-I scholies this fall.

Rivals.com has already introduced to two Compton players who have already have multiple offers in running back Anthony Wright and defensive tackle Porter Hill.
Now there is a third Compton player who has received a scholie offer and he is outside linebacker/athlete Lawrence Winston (6-2, 210, 4.65).
"Lawrence received his first offer from UNLV," Bryant said. "Their linebacker coach Kurt Barber offered and said that UNLV wants to keep the west coast kids in the west."
Looks like UNLV could be on to something. Winston has the versatility that the D-I schools like.
Not only did Winston play linebacker for Compton a season but he also ended up playing quarterback when their starting quarterback went down with an injury.
Winston will be back fulltime at linebacker and big things are expected out of him.
"I think Lawrence is going to make an enormous impact for us this fall," Bryant said. "He has great size and great speed to the football."
"Lawrence has been working very hard this off-season to prepare for his senior season," Bryant said. "We look for Lawrence to primarily play linebacker for us and at times play some tight end for us because he has a great set of hands."
"Lawrence is an outstanding athlete that he's going to be able to help in so many ways," Bryant said. "We are also looking for Lawrence to be one of our leaders on and off the field. He has worn a lot of hats for us."
Besides UNLV, Winston is also getting recruiting attention from Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State, Idaho and Nevada.
Winston likes Oregon a lot and plans to attend their camp this summer.
