THE SITUATION
Tennessee added a late surprise to its 2019 recruiting class when three-star South Carolina defensive back Kenney Solomon committed to the Vols on Wednesday afternoon. The speedy defender chose Tennessee over Louisville and Rutgers and is slated to blueshirt with the Vols, meaning he won't be announced as a signee with the rest of the class but will be assured a scholarship when he arrives on campus later this year.
WHY IT'S BIG FOR TENNESSEE
Solomon saw his recruitment take off during the month of January with Tennessee and several other programs entering the picture. Tennessee was quick to offer and get Solomon on campus where they could pitch the blueshirt offer. After Solomon took official visits to both Rutgers and Louisville, where he was offered traditional scholarships, some thought he might take that route. Instead, the pitch from the Vols resonated and now he's in the fold. Solmon is a low-risk, high-reward commitment for Tennessee, bringing speed and length to the cornerback position, both thinks coveted by Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt.
WHY IT HURTS RUTGERS, LOUISVILLE
While Tennessee had to get creative to make the numbers work, both Rutgers and Louisville had room in their class and hosted Solomon for an official visit over the past month. Each felt good about their standing at times and landing a high upside player like Solomon would have been big for both programs, but instead each was left at the altar as the lure of the SEC and Tennessee was too much for Solomon to pass up.
