Jaylon Jones made the decision to commit to Texas A&M over a host of other schools, most notably Texas and TCU, as well as Alabama, Florida and Ohio State. The 4-star defensive back is the second Class of 2020 prospect to pop to the Aggies during their inaugural Super Bowl Watch Party on Sunday.

Jones, a Rivals250 prospect, gives Texas A&M a playmaking cornerback to plug in opposite 3-star Major Burns, who also committed on Sunday.

WHY IT'S BIG FOR TEXAS A&M

The Aggies made some serious progress on putting together their secondary blueprint in the 2020 class. After securing a verbal pledge from Burns prior to the Super Bowl Watch Party, they landed Jones, a Rivals250 prospect, to close out the afternoon.

Jones is one of the elite prospects in the Lone Star State for 2020. He covers receivers with ease due in part to his top-shelf speed and high football IQ. The 4-star prospect excels in reading opposing quarterbacks and capitalizing. He’s a ballhawk with great athleticism and plays the ball at a high level.

After signing 5-star Erick Young during the Early Signing Period, the Aggies are well on their way to adding some more reinforcement to their secondary in 2020. Burns is a long, physical cornerback, while Jones gives A&M a playmaker at cornerback, which is a must for SEC West contenders.

WHY IT HURTS TEXAS, BAYLOR, FLORIDA, OHIO STATE

Jones has made his way to an array of different campuses in recent months, most notably to Texas, Florida, Ohio State and Baylor. The Longhorns were a major contender to land the 4-star defensive back out of Steele (Texas) after playing host to him on multiple occasions over the past calendar year.

The Rivals250 prospect picked Texas A&M over Texas, which is always a critical victory on the recruiting trail for two Lone Star State rivals. Florida and Ohio State were also hopeful to make a splash by poaching Jones out-of-state.

This early in the cycle, there are plenty of options for all of these programs to chase after. In Texas alone, elite defensive backs such as Dwight McGlothern, Darius Snow, RJ Mickens, Bryson Washington, Lorando Johnson and Chris Thompson Jr. remain uncommitted. A February pledge from Jones to Texas A&M will allow the in-state schools to shift gears and make a harder push for other Texas defensive backs, and for the Floridas and Ohio States of the world to switch their focus to other targets.
