Going into Saturday there were only eight of the top-25 offensive tackles in the nation still available. The Texas Longhorns took one off the board Saturday night wrapping up Florida talent Payton Kirkland adding to an already stellar class.

WHAT TEXAS IS GETTING

When Kirkland wants to turn it on, he is as good as any in his class. Towering over the competition at 6-7, 325, the Dr. Phillips product is a mauler. On down blocks or going head-to-head with a defender on running plays, Kirkland can move the pile down the field. When the quarterback drops back, Kirkland’s long arms helps stunt ends and linebackers allowing extra time for plays to develop.

WHAT MAKES KIRKLAND DIFFERENT

Kirkland’s motor switch and upside makes him different than the rest. There are few fellow 2023 tackles with his talent, size, and athleticism with more room to grow as his technique evolves. Working with Longhorns’ offensive line coach Kyle Flood is a big asset for a player like Kirkland.

WHY THIS IS BIG FOR THE LONGHORNS

Chalk up another Rivals250 performer for Texas in the latest recruiting cycle. The Longhorns have been locked in with the third-best recruiting class in the country compiling one five-star, QB Arch Manning, and 13 four-star players; add their 14th four-star.

Landing Kirkland is big on multiple fronts, but the biggest aspect is Kirkland’s talent. Going deeper, it keeps him away from future SEC opponents Alabama, Florida, and Oklahoma. Looking at the Longhorns’ class, the priority of landing offensive linemen on their board has been met. Kirkland is the fifth offensive lineman ready to go to Austin next year..
