Commitment analysis: Rivals100 LB Trenton Simpson to Clemson
The recruitment of Trenton Simpson began slowly but the Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek star picked up his first offer in the spring of his junior year. Things exploded from there and Simpson quickly became one of the most heavily recruited prospects in this class.
North Carolina was the first school to offer him but they weren’t the only school to catch his attention early in the process. South Carolina, Georgia, and Auburn were big contenders for much of his recruitment. When Simpson announced his commitment to Auburn in June a lot of people were surprised because it seemed like North Carolina had done enough to get him.
Once the season started, Simpson took some quiet visits to see the Tar Heels play and eventually announced his decommitment from Auburn in Mid-October. His first visit after his decommitment was to Clemson, his childhood favorite team, but the Tigers did not extend him a scholarship offer.
An official visit to North Carolina followed Simpson’s trip to Clemson and most believed the Tar Heels sealed the deal while the top in-state prospect was on campus. However, Simpson quietly planned a last minute official visit to Clemson for the final weekend before the Early Signing Period. The Tigers finally offered the five-star and Simpson quickly committed while on campus.
