Commitment analysis: Jalen Rivers chooses Miami

THE COMMITMENT: Rivals250 offensive lineman Jalen Rivers announced his intention to attend Miami on Sunday, picking the Hurricanes over a list of major offers and giving the Hurricanes’ new staff a big recruiting win over the other in-state schools and other regional powers. Below, Rivals.com takes a look at how Rivers' commitment to Miami helps the Hurricanes and how it hurts those that lost out.

HOW IT HELPS MIAMI: Rivers is one of the state’s premier linemen and the kind of player that can help Miami early in his career if he drops the little bad weight he carries. The four-star tackle, who retains some solid athleticism for his size, is battle tested and has proven he can block FBS-bound defensive ends in games and at a number of elite camps. On a macro level, the fact that the Hurricanes beat out Florida for his services is encouraging for UM. This is no small victory for Manny Diaz, as he lured Rivers to a school further away from his Jacksonville-area home and defeated a UF program that went 10-3 a year ago. Diaz and his staff clearly has the recruiting acumen to stand toe-to-toe with anyone and the momentum should only build should UM have a nice season this fall.

HOW IT HELPS THOSE THAT MISSED: Florida gets the brunt of the loss here, as the Jacksonville-based Rivers was high on the Gators for some time. Georgia was involved to some extent, but interest between the Bulldogs and rivers has faded in recent months. Missing on Rivers won’t doom UF by any stretch, but the fact that Dan Mullen is yet to land an offensive linemen can’t be ignored. Rivers was a priority in-state target that attends high school less than 75 miles away from UF’s campus. In the end, however, how much this hurts Florida will depend on what the program’s o-line haul looks like on Signing Day.
