Colorado beats Illinois for Rivals250 WR La’Vontae Shenault

La’Vonte Shenault could not wait until National Signing Day on Wednesday to reveal his college decision.

On the eve of signing day, the Rivals250 wide receiver out of the Lone Star State made it official -- he’s Colorado-bound.

Shenault committed to the Buffalos and first-year head coach Mel Tucker over Illinoi thanks to a late push from the staff. He will sign his national letter of intent on Wednesday and join his older brother, Laviska Shenault Jr., in the receiving corps.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

“There are plenty of reasons to go play at Colorado, not just playing with my brothers. The environment is great, the people are great and I have a great opportunity to play as a freshman. The coaching staff shows nothing but love.”

On Tucker: “He’s a cool coach with a great vibe.”

“At first, Colorado wasn’t really a top contender, but they always were in the equation. I knew that it was always going to be a choice for me and (wide receivers) Coach (Darrin) Chev and the rest of the new coaching staff have been really good to me.”

RIVALS REACTION

This is colossal get for Coach Tucker and his staff to close out their first Late Signing Period as Colorado’s head man.

Shenault becomes just the second 4-star recruit in Colorado’s recruiting class along with tailback Jaren Mangham. Shenault, a top-200 prospect inside the Rivals250, instantly established himself as the highest-rated player for the Buffs’ haul.

Like his older brother, who will be a junior for the Buffs next fall, Shenault excels at making difficult grabs in tight windows, even when he’s covered. The 4-star wideout plays his position like a running back; he’s dangerous with the ball in his hands and eats up yards after the catch.

Tucker and Chiaverini made a huge splash on Monday and avoided the signing day drama. The Buffs are sure to take advantage of two Shenaults out wide in their new-look passing attack.
