Cole shooting for big marks

Ryan Cole plays running back for the state of Washington’s largest high school, South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard, Wash. Cole, in his senior season, has almost rushed for as many yards as his high school has students.
South Kitsap has an enrollment of more than 2,300 students. Cole has rushed for 2,244 yards. While South Kitsap isn’t adding any more students, Cole is still gaining yards. And his 2,244 is already a West Sound record.

With a 9-1 record this season, Cole and his teammates are now in the playoffs, they play Bethel this weekend, where Cole is very likely to encroach further on the state rushing record, which according to Cole is 2,600 yards in a single season.
His impressive statistics haven’t gone unnoticed by the colleges. While Washington and Northwestern had offered him a scholarship prior to his senior season, Oregon and Oregon State have offered him since.
But Cole’s not really ready to start talking about recruiting right now. He still has some unfinished business to tend to.
“I’m waiting to address recruiting until our season is over with,” Cole said. “I haven’t set up any official visits or anything like that. Coaches have asked me, but it’s just a team thing with me. We trying to go to state.”
Southern Cal, Cal and Arizona State are also under consideration but have yet to offer scholarships.
The three-year varsity starter, who is 5-foot-11, 212 pounds, downplays his record-breaking season.
“The state record would be something that would be nice. But we still have a long way to go to get there. And to be honest, I haven’t really thought about it much at all.”
