Coffeyville defenders ready for visits

Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College is off this week as it prepares for the upcoming monster showdown against rivals Butler County (Kan.) Community College on Saturday, Oct. 7. With the Red Ravens off this weekend, many of its top prospects are set to take official visits elsewhere – including its four-star prospects.

Two of Coffeyville's top defenders will be heading to Nebraska on official visits. Four-star safety Gary Chandler, ranked as the nation's No. 4 junior college player overall by Rivals.com, is slated to visit Lincoln and joining him will be four-star linebacker Larry Asante. The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder is ranked as the No. 10 juco player in the nation.

"They're both going up there to check things out this weekend," Coffeyville assistant Rico Cherico said. "They're excited about the visits and hope to have a really good time."

The Nebraska interest looks to be a new development.

Just last week, Chandler said he'd not heard from the Cornhusker staff. He had listed Kansas State as his top team with offers also on the table from Arkansas, Iowa State and Wyoming. Asante has quickly climbed up the charts and is now one of the nation's top junior college linebackers.

Both Chandler and Asante have had big seasons so far.

Through four games, Asante had 30 tackles, five tackles for a loss and two blocked kicks. Chandler through five games has 41 tackles, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups.

Also scheduled to take a visit this weekend is four-star defensive tackle Tommie Duhart.

The 6-foot-4, 285-pounder is scheduled to visit Pittsburgh this weekend. The Panthers are the big-time leaders for Duhart and it's quite possible he'll commit this weekend to the school he originally signed with out of high school.

Last week, Duhart and Chandler shared defensive player of the week honors. Duhart had 9 tackles, 3 ½ tackles for a loss, one sack, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. Duhart has also been offered by Kansas State.
