Clemson nets commitment from four-star OG Harris Sewell
Odessa (Texas) Permian four-star offensive guard Harris Sewell announced his commitment to Clemson on Monday, as the West Texas bruiser became the second four-star interior lineman from the Lone Star State to pledge to the Tigers in the month of June.
Sewell's recruitment remained fairly wide-open going into the calendar year, but as we entered the fall of 2021, it became clear that it would be a battle between Clemson and Texas A&M.
Sewell took a total of four visits to Clemson during his recruiting process, including his first official visit on June 3-5 when the Tigers were able to land Austin (Texas) Vandegrift four-star offensive lineman Ian Reed. As the month of June went on, it was apparent that Clemson made a lasting impact as Dabo Swinney and his staff were able to weather an official visit to Texas A&M and strike gold on two four-star interior linemen pledges in 2023.
"What I like about Clemson is how they'll develop me as a man and how Coach Swinney has his program aligned to be a family-like program and developing young men to be men," Sewell told TigerIllustrated's Paul Strelow.
COMMITMENT ANALYSIS
In thinking of what a perfect fit would look like for Sewell, it's hard to find one better than Clemson. From a culture standpoint to the kind of offense he would best succeed in, Clemson stands out.
Sewell's high school offense runs a Wing-T, which is uncommon for the Texas 6A level, but it has given Sewell a ton of experience in the run game, especially with veer concepts where he is the pulling guard that gets pushed downfield. His upper body strength in the interior allows him to overpower interior defensive linemen that may even hold a weight advantage on him.
There will have to be some early adjustments made early on in his time at Clemson to account for the switch in offensive style, as Sewell will need to catch up to speed with his pass protection skills, but it's a safe bet to see Sewell excel in his sophomore season in the spring with a chance to earn a starting position soon after.
