Position: Offensive tackle
Size and speed: They don’t come much bigger than the 6-foot-9, 376-pound prospect who wears a size 18 shoe. No 40 time reported.
Honors: All-conference selection for class 3A team with a 12-2 record.
Statistics: Registered 65 pancake blocks as a junior and will be a three-year starter.
Favorite colleges: “Schools are ringing the phone off the hook asking for film,” Burns coach Ron Greene said. “Today, Maryland, BYU and Virginia called.” He has no scholarship offers yet and is camping at the Nike camp in Blacksburg, Va. and with NC State, Virginia and Clemson. In a previous interview, Hemphill listed Clemson, NC State, Virginia, Maryland and Florida State among his favorites.
The Skinny: When you’ve coached three players who have made it into the NFL, like Lawndale (N.C.) Burns’ Ron Greene has, then you might know a thing or two about talent when it walks onto your football field.
Such is the case with Alex Hemphill, who is Greene’s top senior prospect this season.
At 6-foot-9, 376 pounds, Hemphill is a mountain of a prospect.
“Alex has unlimited potential,” Greene said.
“He needs to improve on his agility, which he knows, and we’re working with him every day.”
What’s scary is that Greene may still be growing. After all, the young giant, who recorded 65 pancake blocks last season, is only 16 years old. And he’ll be a 17-year old freshman in college.
Still, the coach and player aren’t resting on the prospect’s size and unbridled talent alone.
“He is a hard worker and is always showing improvement,” Greene said of Hemphill, who will be a three-year starter at offensive tackle.
“He has good form and has a nasty streak in him but must work on agility.”
Even though Hemphill obviously has some work ahead of him, coach Greene knows exactly what a lot of college coaches are thinking.
“You can’t coach 6-9, 376 (pounds), but you can coach technique and agility,” he said.
