Chicago lineman draws first offer

Chicago (Ill.) Morgan Park junior offensive line prospect Ramone Johnson (6-foot-4, 310 pounds) landed his first scholarship offer on Monday from the University of Illinois. Johnson joins Morgan Park teammates quarterback Demetrius Jones and wide receiver Chris James in landing an early offer from the Illini this winter.
"I was at the Illinois junior day on Saturday and gave the coaches my tape," Johnson said. "The coaches from Illinois called my head coach (Lexie Spurlock) Monday afternoon and told him that the Illini were offering me a scholarship."
Johnson talked about landing his first offer from the Illini as well as his experience last Saturday in Champaign.
"It feels great to get an early offer, especially from Illinois. I'm excited about the offer, very excited. The coaches mentioned to me over the weekend that they wanted to evaluate my tape, but that they were close to giving me an early offer. I guess they liked what they saw on my tape."
"The junior day at Illinois was all good. We got there late, but we had a chance to know the coaches really well since we were late. The coaches at Illinois spent a lot of time with myself and Chris and Demetrius. We had a chance to talk with the coaches, and I also got a chance to meet the new offensive line coach (Ed Warinner). I really liked all of the coaches at Illinois, and I was also impressed with the facilities."
Johnson has continued to draw tape requests and junior day invitations from several schools this winter.
"I've been getting steady mail from Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, Tennessee and Eastern Michigan. I'm planning to check out junior days this weekend at Purdue and Michigan. I'm also looking at going to the junior day at Notre Dame on February 27th."
