Channelview lineman commits to UTEP

Channelview (Texas) High School's Jerel Watkins has committed to the University of Texas-El Paso after a year in which he improved his lineman skills tremendously.
The 6-foot-3, 260-pounder grew into the offensive tackle position after starring at tight end during his time at Channelview.

"He's transitioned very well," coach Averion Hurts said. "He's just so athletic with great feet and explosion. What he does well is leverage and finishing blocks. He's going to get up to 300 pounds in college."
Watkins joins defensive lineman Tyrone Campbell as Channelview's Division I commits this season. The 6-foot-2 defensive tackle verballed to the University of Houston this summer.
The well isn't dry for Channelview as 2010 prospects Cedric Stewart, Dominique Jefferson and Chris Hawkins all emerged in 2008.
"Cedric is a big offensive or defensive lineman, while Jefferson will be an athlete," Hurts said. "Hawkins is a special receiver who drew double-teams all season. He's a 4.4 (40-yard dash) guy, who became one of the district's most feared receivers."
