"UAB offered today," Challenger said Monday evening. "It felt good. I mean, the hard work is finally paying off. Hopefully, it's the first of many. I've always wanted to play D-I. Having that first one is big."
The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Challenger, who plays both safety and outside linebacker, will be a three-year starter this season. He camped at UAB on Saturday and both parties came away impressed.
"I played safety at the camp, but they offered me as an outside linebacker," Challenger said. "I called [assistant] Tyson Helton today and he told me I did really good at the camp and they wanted to offer. I was real happy"
The Citadel is the only other school to offer thus far.
"I like UAB a lot," Challenger said. "My stepdad actually went there, so I've got a little connection. It's only about 30 minutes away. I'm definitely considering them. Definitely."
Next up for Challenger, who had more than 100 tackles in 2010, is a July 22 trip to Mississippi State for a camp.
