Carter pledges to Rice

Not long after Rice offered two weeks ago, Birmingham Spain Park junior safety Justin Carter said he already was close to picking that program.
He wasn't kidding.

On Monday, the 6-foot, 185-pounder committed to the Owls.
"I committed yesterday after school," Carter told Rivals.com Tuesday morning. "I called [cornerbacks coach Chris Thurmond] and told him and then called [head coach David Bailiff]. They were thrilled to hear it."
Carter, a two-year starter at Spain Park, visited Rice last weekend during the program's junior day.
Rice was the first program to offer him. According to Carter, he also has received interest from several Ivy League programs.
Carter carries a 4.06 GPA. He hopes to major in either finance or pre-med.
As a child, he lived in Houston for five years, so he already is familiar with the area. In fact, during his weekend trip to Rice, he stayed with an old friend.
"I'm very excited to return to Houston and to be a Rice football player for the next four or five years of my life," Carter said.
