Cardinal adds punch to offense

Stanford has stockpiled an admirable arsenal of offensive talent over the past few years. On Monday, they added another arrow to the quiver.
Matt Traverso, the four-star tight end from Sacramento’s Christian Brothers, pledged to the Cardinal on Monday turning down overtures from Arizona, Northwestern, Oregon and Illinois among others.

For Traverso, it was an easy decision once he was accepted academically into Stanford.
“It was a lot of things, but it really came down to Stanford being the place where I wanted to be,” Traverso said.
“First of all there’s the education. It’s big time at Stanford. And when I was down there talking to the coaches, I just really felt comfortable with all of them.”
Traverso says the fact that Stanford’s Palo Alto campus is only a two-hour drive from Sacramento also played a factor.
“I think the location is just about perfect for me. I’m in a situation where I can drive two hours and go back home and see my family if that’s what I need to do. At the same time, two hours is probably far enough off that I feel like I’m going away to school.”
Traverso, who is 6-foot-6, 245 pounds, caught 27 passes as a senior for nine touchdowns. He says he averaged more than 20 yards per catch.
He also plays defensive end. He recorded 63 tackles, 15 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, nine batted passes and caused five fumbles as a senior.
“I’m very happy about going to Stanford. It’s a great program all the way around.”
