Cannon ready to explode

Alex Cannon has one year to prove himself.
The speedy Long Beach (Calif.) Poly receiver has never played in a varsity game due to hip injuries, but that should change this fall.

"I'm finally healthy for the first time," Cannon said. "I'm definitely looking forward to this year."
The 5-foot-11 wide out had hip surgeries in January and February of his sophomore year to deal with a problem he'd had since birth.
"The way my bones were, they kind of cut into the muscle," Cannon said. "I was going to be a starter at the beginning of the season this year, but I came back too early. It was a little mix-up."
Cannon practiced but couldn't handle the physical toll of playing. This year, though, he's ready to go.
"I can't wait to get out there and play," he said. "We're going to have a different offense, we're going to pass more than in the past few years."
He got off to a good start at the Air Strike Passing Tournament in Dana Hills and San Clemente last month.
"It went pretty well. I've already made a small highlight tape off it," Cannon said. "I believe showed off what I can do. Against Mater Dei, I had a really nice catch which showed I can jump."
Cannon admits his recruiting process has gone slow due to the lack of playing time. He's spoken with San Diego State and said they were the first school to start recruiting him.
One school that has earned Cannon's interest is UCLA.
"I know they're looking at Kaelin Clay, and they've expressed a little interest in me," he said. "They said they'd keep an eye on me. I just love the campus and I know it's a good school and local."
