Canes Waste No Time; Get First Commit

The Miami Hurricanes rarely offer prospects this early in the recruiting process, but their first oral commitment for 2003 was just too good to pass up.
"I committed to Miami on Tuesday night," said Royal Palm Beach, Fla. defensive tackle Dave Howell. "I really like the coaches and they've always been my favorite team. I didn't see any reason to wait."

Howell had already received offers from BYU, Oregon, Boston College, Illinois and Washington but couldn't pass up the 'Canes.
"They're the defending champs and they need defensive linemen," said the 6-foot-5, 296-pounder who runs a 4.87 40-yard dash. "When you can play for the best and challenge yourself, that's what you do. Miami is the best."
As a junior, Howell had 85 tackles and registered 15 sacks. He is considered to be one of the top 25 players in Florida in the 2003 recruiting class.
