California star makes his choice

Orange (Cal.) Lutheran athlete Anthony Vernaglia has made his college commitment. Who won out for the four-star stud?
"Anthony committed to Notre Dame," said Betsy Vernaglia, the mother of the 6-foot-4, 218-pounder. "He and his father flew out to South Bend and told coach Willingham in person."

So why the Irish over Virginia and Penn State?
"It came down to a really good fit for him, it was great academically and socially," said his mother. "He's okay with playing linebacker (UVA wanted him as a wideout and PSU as a safety) but the receivers coach has been talking to him as well. It could be a battle between position coaches as to where he plays."
It came down to a two-team battle between Notre Dame and Virginia, his mother said.
"He left a message for coach Golden at Virginia and he was upset he didn't get to tell him over the phone live," she said. "UVA has been so great in recruiting him, but you can't beat Notre Dame and the tradition and educational opportunities. He's very excited about it."
Vernaglia committed to coach Willingham about two hours ago his mother said.
"Word travels fast," she laughed. "It's all over now, which is a great thing for Anthony."
