Cali LB has five on top

Van Nuys (Calif.) Birmingham is absolutely loaded in the class of 2008 and will once again be among the state’s top teams. Last year’s L.A City champions return most of their top performs including talented linebacker Donovan Carter.
Carter, 6-1, 220 pounds had a big junior season totaling 128 tackles, six sacks and one interception that he returned for a touchdown. He earned 1st team all-league, all-city and all-area honors and draws raves from Patriot coach Ed Croson.

“Donovan is just a tremendous player,” Croson said. “He does everything for our defense. He calls the plays, he gets the guys in the right places and he’s a very good leader for us.
“Those are just his intangibles. As for his ability, he’s a big hitter and very aggressive. He can really fly to the ball and plays the run well. He can cover as well but he’s a natural run stuffing inside linebacker with just a huge upside to him.”
On the recruiting front, Carter is still waiting for his first scholarship offer but is hearing from a host of schools right now.
“Oregon, San Diego State and Arizona State are recruiting me the hardest right now,” Carter said. “I’m just waiting things out and seeing what my options are.
“Right now, the schools I would put in my top five would be Cal, Oregon, San Diego State, Washington and Miami. I have no problem leaving the area and I’m just looking for a school with the best combination of academics and athletics.”
