Compton (Calif.) defensive lineman Datone Jones is quickly becoming one of the hottest prospects in the state. The lineman is now up to six scholarship offers after receiving two more last week.
When we last spoke with Compton (Calif.) coach Calvin Bryant, he mentioned being a little disappointed that none of his players had been recruited by the two local schools the past few years. That has all changed now.
"UCLA just offered him over the weekend," Bryant said. "It's funny, I was talking with Coach Walker recently and mentioned that Datone wasn't even invited to their Junior Day.
"Coach Walker said they hadn't watched his film yet and once Coach Howard (DL coach) checked it out, he immediately said they had to offer him. Datone called over the weekend to say the written offer came in from them and was really excited about it.
"Fresno State offered as well. We have a player here, Porter Hill, that signed with Fresno State this past February and he's already working on Datone saying he needs to come to Fresno State. Fresno State plays UCLA in two years and Porter was talking some good natured smack how they would be beating him unless he chose to follow him to Fresno.
"Datone likes UCLA but I still think he'll go through the process and take his trips. Early on, he told me what schools he liked and never mentioned UCLA. To be honest, that was because I don't think he expected UCLA to go on him.
"In the past, UCLA has recruited Verbum Dei, Dominguez, LB Poly but has never recruited any players here so it's exciting to see them recruiting one of our guys."
Colorado, Oregon, Arizona and Mississippi were the other schools who had previously offered Jones.
