Derik Calhoun has made up his mind and the four-star linebacker from El Cerrito, Calif., is ready to make his decision.
The 6-foot, 196-pound standout plans to make his commitment within the next week and even though Calhoun is not hinting at which schools are being considered it sounds like Cal, USC and UCLA are the frontrunners.
"I'm comfortable with everything," Calhoun said. "I can't say the school right now but I'm positive in my decision that I'm going to make.
"I'm going to say the school and that's it."
Calhoun, who looked good at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge in Chicago a couple weeks ago, recently camped at Cal and there are definitely pluses to playing for the Golden Bears.
"I like them," Calhoun said. "The coaching staff is great, they're in my backyard. The education is great. If I went there I could play with some of my fellow teammates like Jalen Harvey, Michael Barton, too, and a lot more people that I know."
However, UCLA and USC have been considered the favorites for some time.
The Bruins were the early leader and Calhoun said UCLA has many positives throughout his recruitment. In recent weeks, USC has emerged as well as a viable contender. Calhoun's sister plays basketball for the Trojans and that might be an influence as decision day nears.
During his recruitment, Calhoun has said many positive things about both UCLA and USC.
Those two programs look like the leaders heading into Calhoun's decision day but the four-star is staying tight-lipped about which school will win out at this point. The Golden Bears also seem in the mix.
"Cal, UCLA and USC are like the same to me," Calhoun said. "I love all three schools very much. It's going to be a hard decision just to pick mostly out of those three."
Whichever program Calhoun picks, he said his recruitment will probably be finished. No other official visits are being considered and he's going to stick with his choice.
"I'm probably just going to be a man of my word and just stay with it," Calhoun said.
