Troy Bacon was sitting in his truck before the school day - isn't this how all good stories get started?
The Hesperia (Calif.) Oak Hills offensive lineman received a surprise call. He answered it and now the soft Boise State commit has another option to seriously consider in his recruitment.
"He surprised the living hell out of me," Bacon said. "I was sitting in my truck before school and I get a call from a number I didn't have in my phone from Oakland so I thought it was maybe an all-star coach. It was coach (Zach) Yenser from California. I didn't know what was going on.
"We started talking and he said, 'Troy, where do you have offers from?' I told him and I told him I was a soft commit to Boise and he said, 'One of our guys declared for the NFL draft, so we need to fill our lineman spot and we have a spot open.' I asked if he was offering me and he said yes.
"I was kind of speechless at first. It didn't really sink in until I hung up the phone. He said next week he's going to come down and I'm probably going to take a trip up with Kennedy (Emesibe) - not next weekend, but probably the following weekend."
Emesibe, who committed to Cal earlier this month, is Bacon's teammate at Hesperia Oak Hills. Bacon pledged to Boise State in December but admits the offer from Cal definitely makes things topsy-turvy in his recruitment.
"It kind of threw it upside down," Bacon said. "Cal was one of my favorites early on. It's close to home and my parents love the town. My dad and I went up there on junior day and the facilities are incredible. It is insane. Boise has near the same facilities. The thing that Cal has is the academic part and the prestige of Cal-Berkeley. I still have to talk to my parents about it."
