Cal lands local linebacker

Berkeley (Calif.) is one high school that Cal should always recruit well. It’s just a stones throw away from the Cal campus so it was no surprise when Yellowjacket linebacker Eddie Young took a quick visit to the campus and committed to the Bear coaching staff.
“It was an easy decision for me,” Young said. “I’ve always wanted to go to Cal. It’s close to home, I love the campus and coaches, the program is one of the best in the country and they recruited me at the position I want to play in college, which is linebacker. A lot of schools were recruiting me for tight end but I prefer defense, I have a defensive mentality.”

Young has an older brother Sean, who is a red-shirt freshman receiver at Cal already but he said that played no role in his decision.
“Sean likes it there and all but I was going to Cal as soon as they offered me,” Young said. “He was telling me how much he likes it there and everything but I’ve been around the school so much, I feel like I know as much about as anyone. I’ve gone to their summer camp multiple times and I was the MVP for the linebackers this past year. I know the coaches really well and it was just an easy choice for me to make.”
Young said he was always hearing from and had verbal offers from Oregon, Oregon State, Utah, San Diego State and UNLV. At the NorCal Nike Camp, Young tested well running a 4.72 in the 40, jumped 28 inches in the vertical and did 16 reps on the bench. On the field this season, Young said he has been ‘balling’ and his numbers show that.
“I’m having a great year,” Young said. “The team is 5-1 and I have around 70 tackles and 12 sacks. I’ve been playing really well and it’s great to go out like this, my senior year and all.”
