He considered schools in the Big Ten, other Pac-12 programs and even Notre Dame. But after talking with coaches and taking visits, the four-star receiver found everything he loved at California.
Payton, rated No. 20 at wide receiver and No. 120 in the 2012 class by Rivals.com, committed to the Golden Bears on Saturday at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
It came down to Cal and UCLA, a late charger in his recruitment, but Michigan, Notre Dame and others were involved.
For Payton, he felt most comfortable in Berkeley and said the Golden Bears had everything he wanted.

"Overall, I feel the best there," Payton said. "It's like a family for me. It's like talking to one of my parents. They're good guys.
"I know all of the players up there. They all welcomed me. Overall, it's just the best place for me. It's not too far from home, but far enough away to where I can kind of do my own thing. Everything's just ... it's just the right school. Academics - which is what I'm about - it's perfect up there."
