Cade Brewer has been committed to SMU since April. Since then, Mustangs coach Chad Morris had been lucky that other teams hadn’t paid much attention to him, despite his role on one of the most potent high school offenses in the state in Lake Travis.

Then in early December, things took a turn as new Texas coach Tom Herman began his recruiting blitz around the state and Brewer was one of several in-state players that had long been waiting to for an offer from the Longhorns.

“Things were very slow, teams hadn’t been talking to me since the summer,” he said. “When Tom Herman got the job, they started talking to me a little bit and went to my game against Westlake. I played pretty good, they gave me an offer and I was pretty excited, I’ve always wanted an offer from UT so it’s going to be a hard decision after the season.”

Brewer isn’t as big as some of the other top prospects in the state at the position, but has proven he’s a very capable receiver. In last weekend’s 6A state semifinal win against Atascocita, Brewer caught three touchdown passes from fellow SMU commit and unrelated teammate Charlie Brewer.

Major Tennison was the Longhorns’ lone tight end commitment in 2017, but he decommitted in July. With the new offer from his hometown program shaking up his recruitment, Brewer said that he’s noticed a renewed sense of urgency towards him from Morris’ staff.

“They’ve been talking to me more than usual now, I guess,” he said. “(SMU) really wants me to go there, and I am pretty firm on my commitment now, but I’m not going to make a final decision until after the season.”

Herman has certainly brought with him an expectation to return Texas back to national power status and he expects that will help him close strong with this year’s recruiting class. That makes it all the more important for a more unheralded player like Brewer to consider his options carefully.

“It’s going to be a pretty quick decision after the season,” he said. “It’s got to be, they wanna know pretty quick. It’s going to be hard, so we’ll see.”
