Byrd wants to play linebacker

Three-star linebacker Roshaad Byrd of Meridian (Miss.) knows what position he wants to play in college. Therefore, he did not commit to Southern Mississippi this weekend.
"I talked with (Southern Miss head coach Jeff Bower) and he said he wants me to play defensive end," Byrd said. "I was going to take the offer if he asked me to play linebacker, but it didn't work out that way."

The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder will visit either Marshall or Alabama next weekend. His visit to Texas A&M, scheduled for last weekend, was cancelled so it is also possible he visits College Station.
Other than the lack of interest in playing end, Byrd's visit to Hattiesburg went well.
"I enjoyed myself," he said. "I got to know everybody around campus. I thought the facilities were nice (at Southern Miss) and I was very interested in the area."
Anthony Perine was Byrd's player host for the weekend.
The three-star rated Byrd is the nation's No. 53 outside linebacker prospect. His recruiter of record from Southern Miss is Jay Hopson.
