Skinny: Haleyville (Ala.) wideout Kiah Brown isn’t certain how far his football talents will take him, but that hasn’t slowed him down.
Despite lacking the size or speed possessed by some of the higher-profile receivers, all he did last season was catch 52 passes for 947 yards and eight touchdowns en route to Class 4A all-state honors from the ASWA and the Birmingham News.
“I have to do the little things,” Brown said. “I’m not going to beat guys with my speed, so I’ve been real dedicated to running perfect routes and catching the ball. I’d say my best attribute is my hands. If you do those things and the quarterback puts the ball where it should be, you can still be successful even if you’re not 6-fooot-3 or run a 4.4.”
Brown is hoping another big season at Haleyville hopes him garner more attention on the recruiting trail. He’s received letters from home state powers Alabama and Auburn and a few from LSU and Georgia, but isn’t sure he fits into their plans at this point.
“I’m trying to be realistic and not get my hopes up too much,” he said. “I grew up an Alabama fan, and I’ve love the opportunity to play there, especially with the new coach and the way they’re going to throw the ball. But I know they recruit some of the top players in the nation, not just from around here.”
His heaviest interest comes from the Ivy League, where he has received attention from each program. He maintains a 4.0 GPA and has scored a 26 on his first ACT attempt.
This summer, Brown plans to attend the Bowden Passing Camp at Troy State and may camp at Alabama or Auburn, time permitting.
