Top-ranked signee: DB Derwin James -- James was the No. 5 overall player in the 2015 class, and he committed to the Seminoles in February of 2012. He may be new to campus, but he is making his presence felt. The safety is the second leading tackler with 68 tackles. His seven tackles for loss, three sacks, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries also put him among Florida State's team leaders.
.
Five-Stars: Half of Florida State's 10 five-stars were signed in the 2015 class and their presence has been felt. James has established himself at safety, Josh Sweat is starting at defensive end and Jacques Patrick is second on the team in rushing behind Dalvin Cook. Speaking of Cook, he is a candidate for the Heisman Trophy, while fellow 2014 five-star Travis Rudolph is the team's leading receiver. Jalen Ramsey is one of the elder statesmen in the five-star group as a member of the 2013 class, and he has a long All-American resume of his own.
Highest-ranked position group: Defensive Back -- Derwin James and Jalen Ramsey lead the way for the Seminole secondary. Five-star Tarvarus McFadden serves as Ramsey's back-up and four-star Marquez White has also made a strong impact in the starting lineup throughout the season. Three-star Lamarcus Brutus has started every game so far and unranked Javien Elliott has also drawn some starts in the Florida State secondary. Four-star Trey Marshall started six games before suffering an injury in October.
Class of 2016 recruiting ranking: No. 4 overall, 2,035 recruiting points, 3.71 average star ranking
Where do they come from?
As one might expect, Florida is far and away the primary talent pool for both Florida and Florida States. A pair of states in ACC territory also crack the top four.
FLORIDA -- 11,018 total recruiting points on the rosters (Florida - 5,460, Florida State - 5,558)
We all saw this one coming. The great majority of the talent on the field Saturday is from the great state of Florida. The state is absolutely loaded and there is no reason both schools should not be able to keep top talents at home. James leads the charge for Florida State and Hargreaves leads the way for Florida. The Gators also boast former Florida five-stars Jefferson and Ivey. Florida State's five-stars include Cook and Rudolph in addition to James.
GEORGIA -- 1,153 points (Florida - 688, Florida State - 465)
Both schools have found success to the north in Georgia. Neither school's roster includes a five-star from the state, but Georgia's presence is felt. Florida is led by former four-star receiver Demarcus Robinson, who currently starts for the Gators. Both teams also have three-star starting linebackers from Georgia. Florida's Jarrad Davis is second on the team in tackles and third in TFLs, while Terrance Smith has started seven games at backer for the Seminoles.
VIRGINIA -- 707 (Florida - 120, Florida State - 587)
The Seminoles definitely lead the charge in the state of Virginia. Sweat is the most recent addition from Virginia and the five-star is also the biggest. He has made an immediate impact, and he joins fellow Virginian Derrick Nnadi on the Seminoles' defensive front. Matt Rolin carries the flag for Virginia on the Florida Gators' roster.
NORTH CAROLINA -- 676 (Florida - 496, Florida State - 180)
Like the Seminoles in Virginia, it is the Gators who lead the charge in North Carolina. Five-star Jonathan Bullard is the biggest get for either team and he has made his impact. Quarterback Will Grier is also from the Tar Heel state. Defensive end Lorenzo Featherston leads North Carolina's presence on the Seminoles' roster with punter Cason Beatty also representing the state.
Florida vs. Florida State Recruiting Battles
Janarius Robinson
COMMITTED
WDE Janarius Robinson, Panama City (Fla.) Bay -- Robinson, a Rivals100 member, committed to Florida State in September, but the Gators have not gone away. He is taking an unofficial visit to Florida for the game and will take an official visit to Gainesville after the season.
CB Chauncey Gardner, Cocoa (Fla.) Cocoa -- The Rivals100 cornerback committed to Florida in March but he is taking visits. Georgia and Alabama have already received official visits and Florida State has been mentioned as a possible visit destination.
UNCOMMITTED
WR Nate Craig-Myers, Tampa (Fla.) Tampa Catholic) -- The five-star receiver has Florida and Florida State high on his list. The Gators are speculated to be the frontrunner with his brother Jayvaughn Myers already on the commitment list, but do not count out the Seminoles.
SDE Shavar Manuel, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy -- The two in-state programs remain in the mix for the five-star defensive lineman. Florida has made up a lot of ground for the standout and the Seminoles are not going away.
ATH Bruce Judson (2017), Cocoa (Fla.) Cocoa -- The Rivals100 athlete was previously committed to Ohio State but the Gators and Noles have been heavily involved. He currently has Florida State at the top of his list, but the Gators are right there. too.
