"I'm on my way to Chapel Hill now," Willis told Rivals.com. "I'm going to North Carolina. This is it."
The re-opening occurred when Lane Kiffin, Monte Kiffin and Ed Orgeron decided to take the USC job on Monday night. Willis never made it to Knoxville.
He was about to depart for Tennessee when the news broke on Monday. The change in plans just occurred on Tuesday morning.
"I called (defensive line) coach (John) Blake and coach (Butch) Davis and just talked to them and they are happy," the Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes standout admitted. "I'm already enrolled in admissions there and will be in Chapel Hill later today. My dad and I are in the car now driving up and I'll start classes this week."
Willis is rated as the nation's No. 6 strongside defensive end and No. 41 overall by Rivals.com
