Spencer Boyd is one of the top prospects in the state of Florida at the position of cornerback. Boyd, now 5-10 and 179 pounds, is from Cape Coral (Fla.) High School. He has some big time scholarship offers from teams like Notre Dame, Michigan, Ole Miss, Stanford, and others. This week, he left the Sunshine State for a recruiting trip to the Midwest. Boyd was in Ann Arber yesterday and Columbus today. On Friday he travels to South Bend for a weekend visit to South Bend.
"Michigan was great yesterday," Boyd said. "I got so much love from the coaches and I felt comfortable as soon as I walked in the door. I saw the strength coach first and he's a real firey guy… a crazy dude. I like him. Then I went up and met with coach (Rich) Rodriguez. He sat down and talked with my dad. We saw Christian Green there and talked with him. Then we went and watched practice. We talked again with coach Rod and then coach (Greg) Frey showed me around."
Today, Boyd arrived at Ohio State and like their rival Michigan, he was blown away by the Buckeyes.
"The facilities at Ohio State just blew me away. That was the most impressive thing there by far. The coaches are cool and I talked with (Jim) Tressel in his office for about 45 minutes. He's very down to earth. We also went down the hallway with all these player awards. That was cool. I saw (James) Laurinitis in the locker room and Terrell Pryor working out. It was cool seeing those guys. Then we went to stadium. It's so big and that place looked cool.
"Right now I don't have an offer from Ohio State yet. They said they are only taking two defensive backs. They have not offered many. Ohio State wants to see me more on film."
So did one school stand out over the other?
"Nah. Both schools were very impressive and it will be good to compare them to everyone and Notre Dame this weekend. I am excited about Notre Dame. I will see their spring game and I have high expectations for Notre Dame. Everyone talks them up and I expect a great visit. I want to meet coach (Charlie) Weis and all his coaches. I want to talk with the players and see the campus first hand."
Boyd says he's wide open with the process. In addition to Ohio State and Michigan he has also seen Miami, West Virginia, UCF, and South Florida.
"I have nothing else planned in the next few weeks. We start spring ball on May 1st. I know I want to visit Alabama this summer and maybe Georgia and some other schools."
