Battle on the Border: Woody's news, notes and thoughts on Alabama prospects

Lederrius Cox

Earlier this month I was in Shreveport, La. to take in several games as part of the annual Battle on the Border. The event featured teams from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi. In this piece, we take a look at the prospects from Alabama and take a look at the standout performances as well as some names to know for the future.

THE HEADLINERS

The Tennessee commitment worked exclusively at defensive tackle and was a matchup nightmare for opposing offensive linemen all night. He wasn't in on every series but still managed to make more than his fair share of plays. The official box score only credited him with two tackles, but I counted at least seven, as well as several disruptions thanks to his penetration at the line of scrimmage. Cox has been committed to Tennessee since April and rumors have swirled about a potential flip to Auburn, but he was sporting Vols gloves during the game.

Layman was a priority for the Tigers at quarterback in the 2019 class and he showed flashes of why he was so highly-coveted by the school. On one play he delivered a picture perfect touchdown pass into the back corner of the end zone, the type of throw you rarely see at the high school level. He had his share of ups and downs in the game, and wasn't helped by an offensive line that allowed five sacks in the game. He finished 13-of-26 for 199 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. His rushing numbers, marred by the sacks, were officially seven carries for -48 yards.

NOTABLE UNDERCLASSMEN

CJ Evans

Listed as an athlete in the Rivals.com database, Evans did most of his damage while playing running back. He finished the game with 45 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while also catching four passes for 67 yards. His all around performance shows why Southern Miss has already offered and the Eagles should be the first of many opportunities for the talented all-purpose threat.

NOW INTRODUCING

Korian WIlson

The 2020 defensive back has yet to receive his first offer but he made his fair share of plays in the game, including an interception. He finished with a pair of tackles and also had a pass breakup and made the opposition pay for throwing the ball his way. Depending on how he fills out and camps in the offseason, he could be an FBS level player.

Listed as the backup quarterback on the McGill-Toolen roster, Daffin was all over the field in the game, making plays at both wide receiver and defensive back. He accounted for the bulk of his team's receiving yards, catching eight passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for nine yards and recording several tackles. While Daffin has quarterback on his resume, he showed that he could easily play wide receiver or defensive back at the next level. He is waiting on his first scholarship offer.

Jaden Mosley
Jaden Mosley (Rivals.com)

Mosley is a notable name in the state of Alabama and the next one to come along and be a high level recruit could be Jaden. The 6-foot sophomore was playing defensive back in the came and found himself around the ball all night long, recording at least six tackles and one interception while showing a willingness to come up and help against the run as well. Depending on how he adds weight to his frame he could be a safety or corner at the next level but with his length and background on offense he should catch coaches eyes in the coming months.

SLEEPER SPOTLIGHT

Class of 2019 linebacker Sawyer Brady was around the ball all night, recording four tackles, including two for loss as well as making an interception. He's a little undersized to play at the Power Five level but it's surprising he's yet to nab any offers considering how productive he is in games. He's also been known to moonlight on offense and he had one carry in the game but didn't pick up any yards.
