Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) Dwyer defensive back Shawn Boone is in the final stages of his recruitment. His top five consists of Arkansas, Florida State, Maryland, N.C. State, Ole Miss, and Penn State.
Next weekend he is headed to State College to see the Nittany Lions take on Nebraska. Assistant coach Anthony Midget is recruiting Boone for the Lions.
"He is a really cool guy," Boone said. "Not only is he recruiting me; he would be my position coach too. They (Penn State) have been in the picture for awhile ever since my sophomore year. However, when they got the sanctions they couldn't offer me. They told me if anything ever cleared up they would offer me, and that's what they did. It makes me feel like I can trust them that much more."
The three-star defender said the team's probation will not be a factor because the coaches are doing a great job despite the reduced NCAA penalties.
In January, he will visit Oxford to see what the Ole Miss has to offer. He is looking forward to seeing another SEC campus to compare to his trip with Arkansas.
Last month, Boone was in College Park for Maryland's-Clemson game. This is the Terrapins'' last season in the ACC before the move to the Big Ten next fall.
"They have a pretty good team with a lot of great players," Boone said. "I know guys like Will Likely and Keith Bowers. It was a good experience going up there and I got to do a photo shoot with the sweet jerseys."
Boone wants to decide after his visits and he said distance won't be a factor in his decision. Although he knows all the schools that he will get official visits, there is one school he is keeping an eye on.
"Don't sleep on Florida State," Boone said. "They want to get me up there after the season. Coach (Charles) Kelly told me he is talking to Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt about it. They want to see how their numbers are. I had an offer when Coach (Mark) Stoops was there, but when he left Pruitt wanted to handle things in regards to me.
"If they offer they will likely shoot to the top of my list. The program is headed in the right direction and the defense is always good. Coach Pruitt came from 'Bama where they won national championships, so he can definitely do the same at Florida State."
