CEDAR HILL, Tex. -- Frisco, Texas, tight end Nolan Matthews has been a buzzy name this spring, and after picking up a handful of Group of Five offers over the past several weeks, could be headed for more Power Five offers soon.

Matthews recently took a visit out to Missouri, and said that he hoped to set up visits with Mississippi State and Ole Miss in the coming weeks. While plenty of programs have begun showing more significant interest in him, he said that at this point, it seems as though his only official visit before the end of summer could be to SMU.

“Coach (Josh) Martin has been texting me a lot, and the running backs coach has been hitting me up,” he said. “They want to get me back up there and show me everything. They are pushing for me to take an official visit up there.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, Matthews includes Kansas as his other favorite to this point in his recruitment amongst the schools that have offered. The Jayhawks are currently his only Power Five offer at the moment, but he’s starting to catch the vibe that it may not stay that way for much longer.

IN HIS WORDS

On Missouri

“It was really, really good,” he said. “It was just me up there so I got to spend a lot of time with the coaches - I spent two days there - they showed me around the campus and everything. I got to talk with Bud (Sasser), he’s a wide receiver there.”

“They said that I fit really good out there,” he said. “They had a tight end last season that was about my size, Albert (Okwuegbunam), and he had 11 touchdowns for them last year, so I feel good about things with them.”

On Ole Miss

“They just want to get me down on campus,” he said. “I’m really high on Ole Miss. They’re pretty high in my consideration for my commitment, so it would be big to get that offer … I am going to go out there and talk to them on a visit and I think that’s when they might offer.”

“I talk to Evan Engram, I train with him,” he said. “I asked him about it and he said that he loved it out there and I’ve talked with Laquon (Treadwell) about Ole Miss too.”

RIVALS REACTION

Matthews was one of the most impressive receiving talents at the Dallas leg of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camps presented by adidas, and is exceptionally quick for a tight end. He does a good job working his way back to the ball to win battles with defenders for contested catches and is really starting to see his reputation as a recruit blossom this spring. Regardless of how many offers he takes into the fall, he’s put himself on the radar of a number of teams, and shouldn’t be waiting too much longer for more Power Five offers to be headed his way.
