Big DT Moro Ojomo gives the skinny on his Texas commitment

Few players in Texas were as fiercely recruited as Katy defensive tackle Moro Ojomo since the Early Signing Period.

That sort of attention can be nice for a while, but not as nice as the decision to make a commitment, which came in the form of a pledge to Texas on Tuesday night. On the eve of National Signing Day - and fresh off an official visit to Oregon, Ojomo made the call to the team that many thought he had been leaning towards, but few could definitively predict he would choose.

“Im really happy that it’s over, I’m finally ready to get to work,” he said. “This whole process was great, all the official visits I took were wonderful, and I’m actually sad to see some of the great personal relationships that I’ve built with others have to come to an end.

“The class at Texas is very good. One of the big things was that I want to go somewhere where I can win a championship. They have a really good educational program and honestly I prayed about it and felt best about going to Texas.”

Ojomo’s recruitment might have more visibly taken off most over the last few weeks, but he said that the Texas staff had let him know that he was one of the players that they had their eyes on for much longer than that. His relationship with defensive line coach Oscar Giles was one of the most crucial factors in his decision.

“Texas recruited me hard throughout the entire process,” he said. “It was really them, Oregon and [Oklahoma] … but I dealt a lot with Coach Giles and he’s a great guy; a really good person and I’m excited to see what he can do for me as a player.”

Giles will have a great opportunity to develop one of the most dynamic players from a Katy defense that has no shortage of big-time talent. Ojomo has the sort of strength and athleticism to line up just about anywhere on the defensive front, and it sounds as though he’ll have the opportunity to do that with the type of team culture that suits him best.

“I’ll mostly be playing three (technique), and some defensive end too - really all over,” he said. “I spoke with some of the defensive ends out there and it sounds like they are going to go with more four-down linemen this season. I just wanted to go somewhere that I could dominate and was faith-driven. That was really important to me and my parents and I feel like we found it.”

Texas’ attention now turns to trying to keep Rivals250 defensive tackle Keondre Coburn in the fold, as he’ll sign his letter of intent first thing Wednesday morning. Ojomo is hopeful that the Houston-area duo will be lining up next to each other next season, but hinted that he’s certain at least on other top talent will certainly be joining him on defense before this class is a wrap.

“I’d be really excited to play alongside [Coburn], that is something scary,” he said. “I can’t say too much, but tomorrow I know that we’re going to get some more good news.”
