The five-star all-purpose back who shined at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by Under Armour in Chicago this summer wrote on Twitter Wednesday that he has cancelled his official visit to Texas A&M and will instead visit Cal that weekend when it hosts Ohio State.
"Just cancelled my Texas ATM Trip Today!" Mixon wrote. "Doing what's best for me & the Fam now I'm taking an official to Cal."
In a later message, the Oakley (Calif.) Freedom standout said he would be visiting Berkeley again for the Golden Bears' game against Ohio State, expected to be a big recruiting weekend.
No recruit in Northern California is rated higher than Mixon, the new No. 1 all-purpose back in the Rivals.com rankings, and he's become a huge target for Cal's new coaching staff. Only Gardena (Calif.) Serra athlete Adoree' Jackson is rated higher in the state.
Just last week, the 6-foot-2, 207-pound Mixon took an unofficial visit to Cal and definitely liked what he saw from coach Sonny Dykes' offense.
According to a source, Mixon loved how he would be utilized in the fast-paced offense. He really was impressed by Cal's new stadium and the idea of staying closer to home, where there is more of a support system, is starting to grow on the five-star prospect.
Mixon, No. 10 in the 2014 class by Rivals.com, recently surprised many by saying Cal and Florida were two of his top five. Official visits to Oklahoma and Wisconsin are scheduled for October and Mixon said even with the new, serious interest in Cal that he doesn't plan to make a decision until the all-star games.
Later in the day, Mixon posted on Twitter that his top five could be released soon.
