Big 12 Breakdown: Sophomores already on the radar

In the ultra-competitive recruiting region where the majority of Big 12 teams are found, talent isn’t hard to come by - even players still in their sophomore seasons. Not surprisingly, Texas is producing several top talents already in the 2019 class, and the teams in Oklahoma will keep a close eye on a them while waiting for a few more home-grown names to start popping up.

BIG 12 OFFERS: Oklahoma State

COMMENTS: Oklahoma State is Gunnell’s only Big 12 offer, but Houston, Texas A&M and Texas State have all offered him as well. Gunnell is a big guy, standing 6-foot-5, but says that he likes to use his legs to move the ball as well. The Cowboys like both qualities in the quarterbacks they’ve been recruiting, but they’re going to have to hold off other teams with pass-driven offenses and no doubt others that will jump into his recruitment starting next season.

BIG 12 OFFERS: Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech

COMMENTS: Cain might be one of the best running backs in the country regardless of class already. He’s rushed for 765 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season for a team that uses many players in its rushing attack. Arizona, Arizona State, Miami, Texas A&M and UCLA have all also extended early offers to Cain, who will be in Miami this weekend to watch the Hurricanes play Florida State.

BIG 12 OFFERS: Baylor, Kansas, TCU, Texas Tech

COMMENTS: Whittington’s numbers aren’t nearly as gaudy as Cain’s, for example, and he still has fewer than 200 yards receiving this season, but that hasn’t kept teams from pouncing on him early. He’s reported offers from Houston, Missouri, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Utah - among others - while helping his Cuero High School team to an undefeated record through five games.

BIG 12 OFFERS: Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech

COMMENTS: Boomer is so big and fast already as a defensive end and right now is an effective option at either defensive end position. Nebraska and Tulsa have also offered the young standout, and this season he’s helped Collinsville to a still-undefeated season, beating opponents by a combined 174-44. Playing right in the heart of Big 12 country ought to lead to even more offers soon.

BIG 12 OFFERS: Oklahoma, TCU

COMMENTS: Williams benefits from playing on a Bishop Dunne team loaded with other prospects. Outside of the Big 12, Arkansas, Iowa, LSU, Texas A&M, UCLA and USC have offered. Williams already has ideal size and athleticism for his position and is a capable ball-hawk in the secondary. Through the first four games of this season, Williams had 20 total tackles, three interceptions and two passes defended.
