Ben Olson talks recruiting

Former Thousand Oaks (Calif.) and BYU quarterback Ben Olson is in the beginning stages of the recruiting process but kicked it off over the weekend by taking in the UCLA- Washington State game. Olson has also set up his first official visit for this weekend and said he’s interested in a number of schools.
Olson, 6-5, 225 pounds was a top 10 player nationally three years ago and the No. 1 rated signal caller following his showing at the EA SPORTS Elite 11. He signed with BYU, red-shirted his first and only year in Provo, and spent the last two years in Canada on his Mormon mission.
“The mission was great, I loved it,” Olson said. “I feel like I left as a boy and came back as a man. I was in places like Alberta and Calgary and really grew up a ton while I was gone. I was able to put my faith in to practice and it was just an incredible experience. My passion for football never left though and I have a new love for the game after being gone the last two years.
“Right now, I’m in no hurry to make a decision. I feel like I kind of rushed things the first time and didn’t even take any official visits. This time, I’m going to look at all my options and really do my homework. I’m not going to leave any stone unturned. I want to go to a place that can really develop me as a player, as a quarterback. I know there is going to be competition everywhere but I would like to play early and I’m interested in what kind of system the offense plays in, how much talent the team has, things like that.”
Olson said he enjoyed his time at the Rose Bowl over the weekend.
“Yeah, it was great to watch football again,” Olson said. “It was fun and it was a good game. UCLA fell behind early but they battled back and that was impressive. There’s a lot of pluses with UCLA. It’s close to home, I like their offense and it’s a school I always liked, ever since I was a kid, UCLA was my favorite school.
“I’m going to visit Oregon this weekend on an official visit and I would like to take two or three more visits as well. LSU, Miami, USC, those are just a few of the schools I’m curious about. I like Cal too but I haven’t heard from them. I would definitely be interested in them though. I’m still looking at BYU too. I haven’t closed the door on them or any other schools to be honest. Like I said, there is a long way to go with the process and I’m just in the very early stages of it right now.”
We’ll be hooking up with Olson on Wednesday so look for a video interview later in the week.
