Phoenix Brophy Prep coach Scooter Molander has been around some good football in his playing and coaching career. He started at Colorado State and spent 10 years in professional football with stops in the NFL, World League of American Football and Arena football. When he was asked if he thought offensive lineman Blake Behrens would be a good selection for the inaugural Offense-Defense All-American Bowl, he didn't hesitate.
"Blake is an excellent selection for All-American honors," Molander said. "Not only is he an excellent player on the field, but he's a great kid off the field. He's one of the hardest working players I've ever been around and he has some natural talent that can't be coached. He's 6-foot-4, 280 pounds and he moves really well. He's also got great feet, and I expect him to be a great player on the next level because he works so hard to be the best."
That talent and desire has helped Behrens develop into one of the top offensive linemen in the West and one of the top players in Arizona. Rivals.com, the official selection partner for the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl, has selected Behrens to play in the Jan. 4 game in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
"It's kind of ironic that he's going to be heading to Miami to play in the All-American game," Molander said. "He was down at Miami's summer camp and was selected as the top offensive lineman at the camp. He also walked away with an offer from the Miami coaches."
It was an offer he considered, along with others from Colorado State, Oregon State, Utah, UTEP and several others, before he committed in early July to Colorado.
"It's a real honor to be selected to play in this game," Behrens said. "I was really surprised when I first got the call, but I'm excited because this is something that you really have to work hard to get. It just shows you that all of your hard work can pay off."
After being selected first-team all-region, Behrens' senior season ended with a disappointing lost to Chandler High this past week in the state quarterfinals. It was a tough blow, but Behrens said the chance to play football again on the high school level in the all-star game will help him finish his senior season on the right note.
"It's one more chance for me to prove to everybody what I have and that I'm a great team leader," he said.
