Battle on the Border: News, notes and videos on Oklahoma prospects

Earlier this month I was in Shreveport, La. to take in several games as part of the annual Border Bowl. The event featured teams from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi. In this piece, we take a look at the prospects from Oklahoma and take a look at the standout performances as well as some names to know for the future.

THE HEADLINERS

It was a tough day for Hill's team as they fell behind quickly in their game to Horn Lake and he was essentially left to try to do things on his own. He did flash on a few plays, reading the play at the line of scrimmage and shooting into the backfield to make stops behind the line. He finished the game with eight stops, including three tackles for loss, and didn't see much action in the passing game from his position at safety. Hill also played offense but didn't get the ball in his hands, he did however return three kicks for 50 yards. Hill's versatile skillset combined with his athletic gifts is what earned him his five-star rankings, it was just tough to assess his true impact in such a lopsided contest.

Hester is ranked as one of the nation's top wide receivers but he had no problem playing both ways in the game as he and Hill worked to keep their overmatched squad in the game. He led his team in receiving with three catches for 53 yards and showed his big play ability on a 37-yard grab. On defense, Hester was credited with two tackles, but also had a pass breakup in the end zone. There's no doubt his future is on offense as he's a matchup nightmare for smaller defensive backs and finds a way to may an impact even without an elite level quarterback throwing him the ball. Hester didn't talk after the game but is considering Oklahoma, Michigan, Nebraska and several others.

The one-time Nebraska commit had a tough time getting going against a swarming Horn Lake defense, rushing 10 times for 18 yards. While he struggled, it wasn't all his fault as it was pretty clear early that the loaded Horn Lake defense was too much to handle. Since backing off his pledge to the Huskers several other schools have become involved, including most notably Texas Tech.

NOW INTRODUCING

Just a freshman, Williams is a very intriuguing talent. Listed at 6-foot and 160 pounds, he saw action in the game and had one pass breakup the only time the ball came his way in the passing game. Obviously a lot will depend on how he develops but with his size and length he could be the next big prospect to know out of the school.

Another talented underclassman, Teague passes the eye test for sure and is long with pretty good size. He's billed a wide receiver and had one target in the game, but looks like he could easily transition to defense full-time as well. Offers are sure to come his way if he continues to develop his skills.

SLEEPER SPOTLIGHT

Johnson is a prospect who caught my eye a year ago when I saw him play as well because he's very active and good at fighting off blocks of bigger offensive linemen. He's listed in the database as a linebacker but can also play defensive end. His day was cut short after he suffered an injury, but before he went out he did manage a couple of tackles and a quarterback sack. He lists an offer from Arkansas State and should be on the radar of some other FBS programs as well.

OTHER NEWS AND NOTES

Three-star Oklahoma State defensive back commit Demarco Jones didn't participate in game ... Class of 2019 prospect Aryion Welch doesn't have any offers, but he led Booker T in rushing with 46 yards on seven carries. He also scored a touchdown. Welch also played defense and had three tackles, including a sack ... Class of 2020 linebacker Krishawn Brown had three tackles in the game and continues to look like a player who could develop into a Division I prospect, depending on how he can add weight to his frame ... Class of 2019 wide receiver Marcus Potter played both ways, catching one pass for eight yards and making one tackle. With his ball skills, Potter could easily be a coveted full-time defensive back at the next level.
