Ayers the forgotten man at Lufkin

With superstar power all over the field, it’s easy to overlook Lufkin, Texas, athlete Ashford Ayers. But the 6-foot, 200-pounder is one of the best kept secrets on a powerful Lufkin Panther squad that could end up challenging for a state championship.
“I was at quarterback last year, but they’ve moved me over to cornerback this year,” Ayers said.

“I like what I’m doing now at corner. I like reading the receivers, covering them and running with them. I like locking up with people and showing that I have the footwork.”
What’s keeping Ayers from major attention at this point is that he’s yet to take the SAT. If he were to achieve a qualifying test score, he’s sure to expand his attention and pickup several offers.
“The main ones showing me interest now are TCU, Houston, Kansas and Arkansas is sending me some mail,” Ayers said. “I’m going to take the test pretty soon. Once I get that done, I’m sure that the calls will pick up.”
