Auburn extends offer to four-star WR

Auburn has been active recently at Hattiesburg (Miss.) Oak Grove. The high school is home to one of the most talented group of skill players in the southeast and recently the Tigers extended offers to two of them. First Jay Hughes picked up an offer from Auburn. Four-star wide receiver Robert Johnson wondered where his was and then saw it two days later.

"I got news from Jay, he told me about the offer and I had asked him do you think they're going to offer me?" Johnson said. "He said he didn't know but he called the coach later that day and texted me and said my offer was going to be in the mail too and my head coach told me today that I got it."

Johnson, a four-star wide receiver with a great frame and tremendous athleticism is being recruited Auburn cornerbacks coach Phillip Lolley. However, that is not to say that Johnson expects a position change if he were to select the Tigers.

"The cornerbacks coach came to spring training this year and we've been talking ever since," he said. "He likes me at wide receiver but I'd be willing to play whatever. One day when I called he was bragging on how he liked me at receiver."

The new coaching staff at Auburn is appealing to Johnson but perhaps more appealing is the offense that the staff is implementing.

"Auburn, they just got the new coach and all from last year," he said. "I think they run the spread now and I'm really familiar with that since that's the offense we run in high school. They're in the SEC. I think it's the best conference in college football. I'm looking hard at the SEC schools so I think it's a possibility and Auburn is right in my backyard."

With Auburn now jumping into the fold, Coach Chizik and Coach Lolley will need to make up ground on a few of the schools that are currently standing out to the four-star prospect.

"I'd probably say that sticking out right now is Ole Miss," he said. "I'm kind of high on things in Mississippi right now. Also Mississippi State because Coach Mullen, with that offense they're going to be a powerhouse team. Florida State, they haven't offered me yet but I think they're real close so they're sticking out too. Also Louisville. They've been talking to me ever since we started offseason workouts. We've been developing a relationship on the phone."

As a junior, Johnson did a little bit of everything, carrying the ball 31 times for 276 yards and catching 48 passes for 632 yards.
