ATLANTA -- The winter storm that swept across the South and caused dangerous traffic jams and children to be stranded at schools overnight in Atlanta ended up causing a bit of chaos for those college coaches trying to recruit as well.
Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman endured a stunning 19-hour ordeal after failing to meet with his intended recruit because the high school closed early. Driving from Marietta, Ga., to the Atlanta airport, Herman sat in traffic hour after hour before eventually abandoning his rental car and walking to the airport before being picked up by a friend for the final mile, according to his Twitter feed.
So... 19 hrs in my car with hundreds of my closest friends. Too much ice and accidents to move. Gotta make flight to DFW. Call National- Tom Herman (@CoachTomHerman) January 29, 2014
Rental. Tell them I'm leavin the car and start walking the 4 miles to the airport with my luggage. Fall at least five times in first 2 miles- Tom Herman (@CoachTomHerman) January 29, 2014
Thanks again to everyone for their well wishes and prayers. Please continue to pray for those still stuck out there. It is truly a mess.- Tom Herman (@CoachTomHerman) January 29, 2014
Second-year Syracuse coach Scott Shafer was not thrilled with the delays caused by the snow and ice. He left two messages on his Twitter account, one saying '2 inches of snow, city and airport shutdown ATL #softnosed' and another 'shoveling nothing' with a link to a photo of a small snowplow driving down a street. Shafer deleted the tweets, but not before they were seen and retweeted by several national college football writers, who took delight in pointing out that Shafer's team lost 56-0 during an October trip to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech. Shafer was in Atlanta with assistant coach Tim Daoust.
Indiana assistant Brian Knorr tweeted that it took him six hours to reach his hotel in Atlanta after an in-home visit on Tuesday and he reportedly was meeting recruits' families at Waffle House on Wednesday due to the hazardous road conditions.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta airport reported 930 flights cancelled, which no doubt caused coaches recruiting in the area to scramble and reschedule plans with Signing Day looming less than a week away.
The North Carolina basketball team was forced to ride MARTA when their team bus could not get to the airport on Tuesday night. UNC is playing Georgia Tech on Wednesday night. ESPN2 cancelled its coverage because the television truck could not reach McCamish Pavilion.
