These questions and more are addressed by National Recruiting Analyst Mike Farrell in this week's mailbag.
Frost and Auburn
Will Auburn end up signing Kris Frost?
- Bobby in Birmingham, Ala.
Your guess is as good as mine but I think things will work out with Frost and Auburn in the end. Frost is apparently going to visit Auburn this weekend to meet with Gene Chizik and hopefully, for Tigers fans, things will be ironed out.
Why do I say hopefully? Because Frost is an absolute stud and I think he is a better prospect than Brent Calloway as a linebacker prospect. I'm still not convinced that Calloway will end up as a running back at Auburn. If, for some reason, Auburn is pushing Frost away because it is filled at linebacker after Calloway's flip, it could be making a mistake.
But in the end I think the Tigers will find room for Frost, he will play outside linebacker and be a great one.
Impact of Rumph
Does the hiring of Chris Rumph help Alabama with defensive linemen Jadeveon Clowney and Ray Drew?
- John from Tuscaloosa, Ala.
I think it will help but I don't think it will land the Tide either one. Clowney likes Alabama and the only reason he was even looking at Clemson was because of Rumph. But I don't think it's enough to lure him from South Carolina.
As for Drew, he might consider visiting Alabama now that Rumph is there because he really likes him. If he takes an official to Alabama or even makes it an unofficial, the Tide could get in the mix with Georgia, LSU and Auburn in the end. However, right now it looks as if Alabama is on the outside looking in for both defensive linemen, despite the acquisition.
Penn State won't be top 15
Can the Penn State Nittany Lions land a top 15 class? If so, how do they do it?
- K.D. from Knoxville, Tenn.
No way Penn State gets into the top 15 with the numbers it has to give this year. Penn State will take 14 or 15 at the most and that has always been the plan, so even if the Nittany Lions were having a great recruiting year, and they really aren't, they wouldn't be in the top 15. They can close strong with Deion Barnes and some others, but getting into the top 25 will be the big challenge this year.
Watch Wisconsin for Brissett
What is the word behind the Dwyer trio? Curt Maggitt is announcing around or after Signing Day between Wisconsin, Florida and Tennessee, Nick O'Leary is said to be an FSU lean, but still may look elsewhere and Jacoby Brissett could see playing time early at Wisconsin and they run a pro-style offense and are in need of a quarterback. Is it possible for all three to go to UW?
- Duff from Minneapolis, Minn.
I don't see all three of them going to Wisconsin. We know that's not going to happen. However, there has been more talk of Brissett looking at Wisconsin and that he and O'Leary are less a package deal than once thought.
O'Leary is thought to be a strong Florida State lean. Maggitt is likely headed to Florida, but keep an eye on Brissett. I know a lot of people still feel he is going to Florida State with O'Leary but Wisconsin is a darkhorse here and should be watched.
Irish rise
If Brian Kelly can clean up this weekend with Aaron Lynch, Amir Carlisle and Ishaq Williams, will the Irish finish the year with a top five class? Also, what kind of a chance do they have with Troy Niklas and Savon Huggins?
- Brandon from Knoxville, Tenn.
Kelly and Notre Dame just got Ishaq Williams, which was a huge get because he will be a terror in his 3-4 defense as a stand-up guy who can also put his hand on the ground as a situational pass rusher. I also think all signs point to Notre Dame landing Aaron Lynch. It doesn't make sense for him to de-commit from Florida State prior to taking a visit to South Bend if he wasn't going to re-commit to the Irish. However, figuring out what he's going to do is next to impossible.
As for Carlisle, USC is charging hard. He's visiting there this weekend so we'll see how that shakes out. Kelly will get the last in-home visit there so I still think the Irish have a great shot.
As for Niklas, Notre Dame gets the last shot. I think it comes down to the Irish and Stanford for him. For Huggins, I really think he stays home and chooses Rutgers in the end. Notre Dame probably won't crack the top five but it could finish in the top 10, which would be a great year.
The coveted fifth star
Hey Mike, what are the chances that Anthony Johnson, Kenny Hilliard and Jarvis Landry all get a fifth star?
- Matt from Prairieville, La.
Hilliard is not a candidate for a fifth star. He was just too slow and not explosive enough at Army week to be a fifth-star guy. Johnson and Landry will be under serious consideration for that coveted fifth star however. We are probably adding about 12 guys to five-star status and dropping a couple so next week will be a lot of fun for fans of the rankings and LSU fans will especially be interested to see how things turn out.
Shoot for three
Do you think that Florida State will land at least three of these six players - Timmy Jernigan, Aaron Lynch, Tony Steward, Nick O'Leary, Jacoby Brissett, Jermauria Rasco?
- Wayne from Tallahassee, Fla.
Three of the six would be about as good as it can get at this point. I think they get O'Leary and Steward the way things are shaking out right now. Even though it appears Wisconsin and perhaps a couple other schools have a shot at Brissett, there is still a very good chance he ends up in Tallahassee as well.
The others, I think, FSU trails. Jernigan is a slight lean to LSU. The same can be said for Rasco, with Texas also in the mix again. Lynch appears to be headed to Notre Dame. If FSU can get O'Leary, Steward and Brissett out of the above six, it should be very happy.
Miami faces hurdles
Do you think the Miami Hurricanes will get enough commitments to make it into the Top 25? What is your opinion on what they have done so far?
- Charlie from Monticello, Ind.
No, that's not going to happen this recruiting year but like with Penn State, we kind of knew that going in. Miami was never going to take a big number this year so being in the top 25 was going to be tough. With the firing of Randy Shannon and the transition to Al Golden, there's no way this class will crack the top 25 barring a stunning finish.
Golden is a very good recruiter but keep in mind there was no crossover between the kids he was recruiting at Temple and the guys he is trying to lure to Miami. So he is starting from scratch. He will be judged on next year's class.
