Ask Farrell: How secure is Emeka Egbuka as the top-ranked WR?

The 2021 wide receiver class is one of the more interesting ones across the board because there is a lot of talent at the top and depth down the list.

Right now, Emeka Egbuka leads the list and he backed that up with a dominant performance at the recent Pylon 7v7 in Nevada. He was unstoppable all weekend, did what he wanted and showed why he’s so highly respected among 2021 receivers.

But many others are pushing him.

Second in the rankings currently is Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington’s Jacorey Brooks, followed by Plant City, Fla., standout Mario Williams, Dallas (Texas) Skyline’s Quaydarius Davis and Atherton (Calif.) Menlo Atherton’s Troy Franklin.

All five are uncommitted and all five have been very good, particularly Egbuka, Williams, Davis and Franklin this offseason.

Six through 10 is also loaded with talent as Clemson commit Beaux Collins is the top-ranked committed receiver followed by Notre Dame pledge Lorenzo Styles, Jr. and Ohio State commit Marvin Harrison, Jr.

Baltimore (Md.) Mount St. Joseph star Dont’e Thornton and Zachary, La., recruit Chris Hilton round out the top 10.

It is still incredibly early in the 2021 recruiting class and there will be countless evaluation opportunities ahead. Changes among the top players at the position are inevitable and while many in the top group have had outstanding offseasons, there could be movement among the best receivers in this class.

It's also important to note that players outside the top 10 at receiver could definitely emerge through the recruiting cycle as Jaxon Smith-Njigba moved to five-stars later in the process, Kayshon Boutte moved up big and others moved up and down the list.

We ask Rivals National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell how much he likes Egbuka as the No. 1 receiver in the 2021 class and to name a few others that he’s seen recently that could make a push toward that top spot.

FARRELL'S TAKE

"This is an interesting receiver class because it doesn’t appear to be that top heavy but it is deep. Egbuka is a special talent for sure and has been very impressive so far this spring but there is no way he can feel secure as the No. 1 guy right now. I really like Mario Williams as the best slot in this class, Quay Davis is a great talent who just needs to be a tad more consistently dominant and Jacorey Brooks has all the tools to be a five-star. Any of these guys could jump him.

"But there are also prospects outside the top 10 like Oklahoma commit Cody Jackson who could make strong moves. I don’t see five or six five-stars in this class like I usually do this early, but I might be wrong. Last year's class appeared top heavy and turned out to be deep so many more names will emerge in 2021."
