Ask Farrell: How does Bryce Foster stack up as five-star?

There was a time Rivals might have been a little gun shy naming interior offensive linemen five-stars, but that has changed in the last few recruiting cycles especially as those positions have become more important in the NFL Draft and players at those positions - guard and center - have come to dominate on the high school level.

That is the case again in the new 2021 rankings as Katy (Texas) Taylor offensive guard Bryce Foster is a new five-star prospect in his class after turning in an excellent performance at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas.

Foster was great during drills, during one-on-ones and in the bench press competition as he earned the nickname 'The Mountain,' a nod to the massive and brutal character from Game of Thrones.

After his showing in Atlanta, Foster shot up 79 spots in the 2021 rankings and now sits at No. 11 nationally.

Dating back to the 2015 class, there have been four other five-star offensive guards in Kardell Thomas, Jamaree Salyer, Wyatt Davis and Maea Teuhema. Clay Webb in the 2019 class was the lone five-star center during that stretch.

Foster said this summer that Texas A&M has been the most involved in his recruitment but that Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, TCU and Stanford are also coming on strong.

FARRELL'S TAKE

We ask Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell to break down what he likes about Foster’s game and to compare him to recent five-stars at his position as well.

"Foster is a powerful kid who anchors very well in pass protection and is an absolute bulldozer in the run game. He's not as tall or long as Quenton Nelson was, but he has that can't-miss upside to him. You just know he's going to be a mauler at the next level and get better and better.

"He's also very smart with a great work ethic which is very important. This kid wants to be the best and it's clear not only on film and in person but in his workouts. Kardell Thomas is an interesting comparison because he was so strong and physical as well, but Foster is in much better condition at the same stage. Foster has a chance to be very special."
